Barren women

The World Health Organization says Cameroon is part of Africa`s infertility belt, (geographical region with the highest rate of infertility in sub-Saharan Africa). This has been blamed on the high rates of sexually transmitted infections in the region. Unfortunately, infertility is hardly perceived as a public health concern in Cameroon.
In Cameroon, infertility is one of the major causes of marital instability. Women with fertility problems face stigmatization and diverse forms of abuse which often lead to psychological problems. When a couple is faced with a fertility problem the woman is always regarded as the source of the problem. These women often undergo enormous emotional, social and economic suffering due to their childlessness. Many are beaten and sent out of their homes.
According to the World Health Organization 20% of women in Cameroon between the ages of 20-44 years have infertility problems.
